The Point Reyes National Seashore

The Point Reyes National Seashore Workshop is designed for photographers who are ready to move beyond making pictures—and begin learning how to see the landscape as a personal, expressive subject.

Set within the remarkably diverse terrain of Point Reyes National Seashore, this three-day workshop introduces the foundations of landscape photography as an art form. Towering coastal cliffs, historic ranches, sculptural cypress groves, expansive beaches, and fast-moving marine weather provide an ideal environment for learning how light, atmosphere, and composition work together to convey meaning.

This is not a technical boot camp or a photo tour. First Horizons is a carefully structured, beginner-friendly experience designed to help photographers transition from documentation toward interpretation—learning how to slow down, observe more deeply, and create images that express how a place feels, not just what it looks like.

The workshop is intentionally small, immersive, and supportive, with a balance of field instruction and post-production sessions that help students understand how artistic decisions begin in the field and continue through the editing process.

The Point Reyes National Seashore Experience

Rather than chasing a single “perfect image,” we work each location slowly and deliberately, emphasizing observation, intention, and creative choice. Students photograph the same landscapes experienced by advanced Masterclass participants—but with a different goal: learning how to see.

Pt. Reyes -21

Over three full days, we introduce the essential ideas that underpin landscape photography as expressive work:

  • Learning to recognize light as structure, not decoration
  • Understanding how weather and atmosphere shape emotional tone
  • Developing compositional awareness beyond foreground–background formulas
  • Beginning to visualize the final image while still in the field

Field sessions are paired with two and a half post-production classes, where students learn how editing reinforces vision rather than replaces it. Instruction focuses on Lightroom (or Adobe Camera Raw), with an emphasis on clarity, restraint, and expressive control rather than effects.

This workshop is ideal for:

  • Photographers new to landscape photography as art
  • Experienced photographers shifting away from documentary or travel work
  • Students preparing for future NPPE Masterclasses

By the end of the workshop, students leave with more than images—they leave with a new way of thinking about landscapes, light, and personal expression.

Locations & Learning Environment

Point Reyes offers one of the most varied learning environments on the West Coast, making it ideal for a First Horizons workshop. Weather and conditions permitting, we work across a range of coastal and inland locations, each chosen for its ability to teach a specific visual or conceptual lesson.

Key locations may include:

  • Pierce Point Ranch – historic structures, cypress trees, and layered rural landscapes that introduce compositional grouping and visual rhythm
  • Drakes Beach – wide-open shorelines and reflective sands that encourage impressionistic thinking and simplified compositions
  • Point Reyes Lighthouse – dramatic elevation changes, cinematic viewpoints, and lessons in scale, movement, and atmosphere
  • North and South Beaches – sand, surf, and long-exposure studies focused on motion, timing, and interpretation
  • Coastal overlooks and inland ridges – opportunities to explore compression, abstraction, and spatial relationships

Because Point Reyes is known for rapidly changing conditions—fog, wind, sun, and overcast often shifting by the hour—we adapt our schedule to the light. This flexibility allows students to see firsthand how environmental changes influence artistic opportunity.

All locations are selected with accessibility in mind. Hikes are short, and the emphasis is on thoughtful exploration rather than physical endurance.

Post-Production Objectives

Post-production instruction is directly tied to the visual challenges of Capitol Reef and may include:

  • Creative Segmentation to shape structure, light, and form
  • Teasing out the subtle magic of the Cypress Trees
  • Managing contrast and color without overpowering nuance
  • Developing an individual visual voice from each shooting session
  • Preparing images for fine-art presentation and print

Sessions include individual field and post-production guidance.
