Sand in the Light by Deirdre Grimm
In this Masterclass, you will work the scene and your camera as you capture and create interpretations of a dramatic landscape of sand rill dunes. The light is critical here, and you will work with stunning sunrises and sunsets as they cast a mix of long shadows and golden hues on the wind-tossed sands. We will explore the Playa Trail to capture the contrast of a salt-laden lakebed and explore the contrast between the flat playa and the surrounding dunes. We will also spend time on the Alkali Flat Trail, an immersive experience leading you through the heart of the undisturbed dune fields, and capture dune glows after dark by starlight and moonlight.
You will work in selected backcountry locations and learn landscape art visualization, creative approaches to sky and ground compositions, light atmospherics, and our’ work the scene-work the camera’ methods to capture and express your subjective thoughts and feelings. We provide lectures and instructions for the application of documentary, narrative, and navigation landscape art approaches. Masterclass students capture grand scenic, intermediate, and detail compositions with professional methods such as Stack Focus, Dynamic Range Capture, Lens Choice, ND Filter applications, ETTR, Landscape Gear Management, and more.
Behind the lens, we teach powerful, professional Work the Camera and Work the Scene techniques to help you create what you feel and see. With a qualified instructor by your side, you will learn the simple and nuanced methods of Stack Focus, Dynamic Range Captures, night sky approaches, long exposure techniques, Lens Choice, ND Filter applications, ETTR, and other practices to expand the creative possibilities of your landscape art workflow.
