The Pt. Reyes National Seashore First Horizons Workshop
The Pt. Reyes National Seashore Workshop is a 3-day full immersion, photography workshop that teaches a fundamental approach for the creation of landscape art photographs. Students learn creative capture and composition approaches, visualization fundamentals and how to express their feelings though a finished work. The workshop is small, intimate, collegial, and the instruction hands-on, with intensive field capture instruction at specific locations. Photographers create exceptional documentary images and then learn skills to complete visual narratives.
Upon their return home, students receive 3 hours of online post-production tutor training.
The Pt. Reyes National Seashore Landscape
Thunderous ocean breakers crashing against rocky headlands, expansive sand beaches grace the coastline then fold back to open grasslands before lifting higher into the brushy hillsides and forested ridges. Wisps of fog wash up on coastal hills, and Tule elk roam in gold and green meadows. Jutting dramatically out into the blue Pacific, the 70,000-acre Point Reyes National Seashore is home to 1500 plant and animal species with 80 miles of pristine coastline. Point Reyes’ diversity is a perfect location for a National Park Photography Expeditions First Horizons Workshop. The variety of subjects and compositional opportunities present incredible teachable moments for developing landscape photographers. This 3-day class follows the light and explores Lighthouses, lagoon walks, miles of secluded beaches, historic ranches and ocean skylines. Here, First Horizons Students learn the fundamentals of grand scenic compositions, intimate landscapes, and details. We will grow your composition skills and prepare you for the next steps in landscape art.
Curriculum Assignments for Point Reyes National Seashore
While we teach many of the same processes and creative approaches in all parks, each workshop has a unique theme assignment. First Horizon photographers receive proprietary assignments for each location, explore documentary, narration and navigation art approaches, and share mini portfolios of their work.
