Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

October 3-8, 2017
October 16-21, 2018

Summary: Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument’s (GSENM) vast and austere landscape embraces a spectacular array of bold plateaus and multi-hued cliffs that run for distances, defying human perspective. This is high country, 3,000 square miles of colorful sandstone cliffs soaring above narrow slot canyons, delicate washes, and seemingly endless slickrock. GSENM was the last place in the continental United States to be mapped, and students in this Landscape Masterclass Workshop will photograph frontier areas that few photographers ever see.

As the name suggests, the monument has two distinct areas, Grand Staircase and the Escalante River Canyon. We will explore both land areas in this Landscape Masterclass Workshop.

In the Escalante River Canyons, we will capture stunning desert land waterfalls, arches, riparian oases, sculpted slickrock and explore the narrow Peek-a-boo and Spooky Gulch Canyons. In the more remote and less visited Grand Staircase area, we will capture some of the most spectacular slot canyons in Utah.

Grand Staircase–Escalante is a pristine backcountry that affords excellent opportunities for creative solitude and unconfined wilderness. We will access isolated lands with our 4×4 vehicles and short hikes. I can assure you that as we drive down remote desert roads or hike up into secluded slot canyons, you will be rewarded with all-embracing creative image opportunities, vivid memories, and a yearning to return.

Capitol Reef National Park

May 8-13, 2018

Summary: Spend five days absorbing what took 70 million years and two major geologic events to create and learn Master Level image capture and post-production techniques with Bob Killen, a National Park Service Artist-in-Residence and noted landscape art photographer.

Named for what it looks like (white rock domes like the U.S. Capitol, rocky ridges like marine reefs), Capitol Reef National Park is a 100-mile pinch in the earth’s crust in the geographical middle of nowhere, but it’s overloaded with geological, cultural, and sensory consequence. There’s the Waterpocket Fold, a jagged scar formed from the monocline — the seam left over when shifting plates lifted one side of a fault 7,000 feet. Explore miles of white horizontal rock layers filled with alternating bands of white Navajo Sandstone, red Wingate, shale and pinkish Entrada Sandstone.

Canyonlands National Park

May 15-20, 2018

Summary: For colossal photographic drama of Jurassic proportions and ‘Ol West Get There adventure, you will want to enroll in the Canyonlands National Park Photography Expedition Master Class workshop.

Canyonlands National Park supports 337,598 acres of crimson canyons, stout mesas, flat top buttes, and cathedral spires in the heart of southeastern Utah’s high desert. Water and gravity have been the prime architects of this land, sculpting layers of rock into the rugged landscape you will photograph. The Green and Colorado Rivers divides this national park into four districts, and while they share an aboriginal desert atmosphere, each area retains its own character and offers unique art photography opportunities and travel adventure.

Our workshop will focus on the Island in the Sky District where we will learn grand scenic compositions across vistas that are hard to comprehend. We will explore trails that will take us to rocky rims and overlooks that allow us to shoot the famous White Rim and cliff shadows that caress the Colorado and Green Rivers. Using our 4×4 vehicles, we will then head deep into the spires and rivers along the White Rim Road and Shafer Trail that will allow us to interpret spires and white-cap mesas up close.

This is a land of cosmic hiking, and 4×4 travel to landscapes that few will ever reach, but you will, and you will create some exceptional landscape art photography— guaranteed.
