Summary: There is a land of solitude and peace in Far West Texas where night skies are coal mine black and ancient limestone canyons, their faces carved by rivers of yesterday and today, present the photographer with compositional challenges like no other. It is a land of primitive dirt roads with landscapes and adventures around every turn and from every cliff overhang. Weather-beaten desert surrounds solitary mountain ranges where hundreds of bird species take refuge and resolute cactus bloom in the soft southwestern sun
The Rio Grande River plays a dominant role in Big Bend National Park, and we will explore it from 4×4 road access, by raft and on foot. Three major canyons fall within the park boundary; Santa Elena, Marsical, and Boquillas between which the river flows through a land that is wild and mostly unreachable. However, on this National Park Photographic Expedition, we will get you there and more.
In this Landscape Master Class Workshop we explore deep, but rarely seen canyons, along and on the Rio Grande River, capture amazing formations with a full palette of colors that seem to exceed our visual range, wander into old mines and ghost towns. We will employ stack focus techniques to frame the mountainous backdrops and canyon walls as tack sharp against cactus foregrounds. In Big Bend cloud and sun shift quickly, and our visual studies will emphasize how to connect these light patterns with the land with creative bracketing to compensate for a broad dynamic range.
