Kings Canyon National Park

October 24-29, 2017
October 16-21, 2018

Summary: According to famed naturalist John Muir, Kings Canyon National Park is Yosemite’s Rival. This is a land of plunging valleys, skyscraping Sequoias, and unique rock formations that will challenge your photographic compositional skills.   You will spend your shooting time in this vast, and beautiful area of the central Sierra Nevada mountains, exploring several deep glaciated canyons, alpine lakes, pools, meadows, and waterfalls, against a background of 20 peaks that exceed 13,000 feet. And the canyon is one of the deepest in North America— 8300 feet down!

Kings Canyon National Park is composed of two distinct areas – Grant Grove (home to the General Grant tree, also known as “the Nation’s Christmas Tree”) and Cedar Grove. We will explore selected locations in both districts with a challenging curriculum designed to increase your interpretive skills and to help you create images that are a vision beyond documentation.

Summary: Mojave National Preserve, one of the newest National Parks and the third largest in the lower 48, is a land of desert wilderness, abandoned mines, and ghostly homesteads. Out here, rain is an episodic event, but solitude and peace abound every day. Climb aboard our 4-wheel drive vehicles, explore 1.6 million acres of desert wilderness, roads less traveled, and take advantage of the soft and slanted winter light. During your 5 days in the field, you will be capturing images from spots rarely seen by contemporary man and experience a land that is slowly and inexorably retreating into times past. Learn Master Level image capture techniques in the field and post-production workflow in our conference classroom. Sequoia National Park

August 14-19, 2018

Summary: Sequoia National Park is a dramatic landscape of giant Sequoia Trees, rugged foothills, deep canyons, and thundering waterfalls that spill off glacial rock. For the landscape photographer this a land of Majestic Scenes that provide a plein air classroom for a visual study of light and shadow among the big trees.

In this Landscape Master Class, you will learn specialized exposure concepts that will create photographic art from the lay of giant fuzzy shadows among the halos of twinkling sunlight. Short hikes position our students to explore rushing streams and waterfalls and learn to compose them in splashing detail as well as using smooth motion to reduce them to visual whispers. We will spend time juxtaposing plane and ground across a John Muir meadow, and learn how to capture the night sky with snow-capped mountains as reflective elements. Go eye to eye with a sundown that stretches as far as you can see from atop Little Baldy and do a full visual study of a controlled burn of Lodgepole Pines.

Lassen Volcanic National Park

August 21-26, 2018

Summary: Lassen Volcanic National Park is perhaps the crown jewel of all of our national parks. It is a remote, jaw dropping landscape of alpine lakes, steaming Sulphur vents, splattering mud pots, boiling springs— and as you experience them you know that the earth is not quiet. From a photographer’s perspective we explore visual studies with the park’s signature volcano, Lassen Peak, and then work the winding Kings Creek as it crosses the Conrad Meadows. Sparkling lakes formed from periodic volcanic outbursts, offer creative opportunities to capture extraordinary scenes of light and color as well as moving beyond classic work to construct an image(s) that move past the literal.

In this Landscape Master Class, you will learn specialized exposure concepts that will create photographic art from the sharp edges of volcanic rock against the soft edges of sulphur clouds. Students explore remote rushing streams and waterfalls and learn to compose them in splashing detail as well as using smooth motion to reduce them to visual whispers. We will spend time juxtaposing plane and ground across a wildflower meadows, and learn how to capture the night sky in one of America’s truly light pollution free areas. Move from the literal and explore the expressive as you capture a sundown in the stark Redding Burn area and then slip by quiet Lilly ponds that offer opportunities to find exquisite patterns and textures.
