The Grand Staircase National Monument Master Class
The Grand Staircase National Monument Master Class is a 5-day full immersion, photography workshop that teaches an end-to-end workflow for the creation of landscape art. Students learn landscape capture techniques, creative composition approaches, atmospherics, visualization techniques and post-production methods that will allow them to express their subjective thoughts and feelings. The workshop is small, intimate, collegial, and the instruction hands-on, with intensive field capture instruction at specific locations. Photographers identify and then increase the emotional range of their work to create images that are a vision beyond documentation while gaining valuable insights into landscape thematics, mini-portfolio creation, environmental considerations, and visualization skills for the creation of landscape art photographs.
Upon their return home, students receive 5 hours of online post-production tutor training.
The Grand Staircase National Monument Landscape
Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument’s (GSENM) vast and austere landscape embraces a spectacular array of bold plateaus and multi-hued cliffs that run for distances, defying human perspective. This is high country, 3,000 square miles of colorful sandstone cliffs soaring above narrow slot canyons, delicate washes, and seemingly endless slickrock. GSENM was the last place in the continental United States to be mapped, and students in this Landscape Master Class Workshop will photograph frontier areas that few photographers ever see, such as stunning desert land waterfalls, arches, riparian oases, sculpted slickrock and explore the narrow Peek-a-boo and Spooky Gulch Canyons.
Grand Staircase–Escalante is a pristine backcountry that affords excellent opportunities for creative solitude and unconfined wilderness, that rewards our students with all-embracing creative image opportunities, vivid memories, and a yearning to return.
Curriculum Assignments for Grand Staircase-Escalante
While we teach many of the same processes and creative approaches in all parks, each Master Class has a unique theme assignment. Master Class photographers receive proprietary assignments for each location, explore documentary, narration and navigation art approaches, and create mini portfolios of their work.
